Slides and ideas for programs and visits with older adults and between
generations.
Great programs to involve older adults don't have to be expensive. Try
slides and ideas.
Slideas bring back memories:
"I remember the display case full of penny candy in Taylor's store.
There was a space between the glass and the bottom of the case. One day,
the big boys dared me to get my hand in there for a treat. When I tried
it, the glass came down with a crack and here's Old Taylor waddling over.
And, of course, my friends were blocks down Main Street. And my arm stuck.
But when I did get away I had the one jawbreaker."
Here's what you get in each set:
- Slides. Twenty in a plastic sleeve. The black-and-white historical
photos bring back memories. Current color shots focus on the chosen
time or topic.
- Guide. A script to read with the slides allows you the flexibility
either to go through the program without stopping or to discuss each
slide individually. There's no cassette tape, so you set your own pace!
- Activities. Ideas to expand your program into a whole series.
Program ideas you can use with little or no cost. Ways to involve even
more group members in the program topic.
- Discussion starters. Questions to think and talk about relate
to the topic and sometimes to an individual slide.
- Resource list. Books, records, songs, poetry, or a film especially
chosen for older adults to add one more dimension to your programming.
PLUS you get a FREE binder when you buy all 4 sets in a
volume, or choose any four Slideas sets to order at one time. (You save
$10 AND you get a free binder whenever you buy four slide sets at a time.)
What's so great about slides?
- Slides set a mood. A darkened room makes it easier to focus
on the subject. The setting draws individuals into the group experience.
- Slide sets are flexible. Use the set as it is, use just part
of it, or use individual images. Use slides with a group or for visits.
- The image is big and clear. You can make the size of the projected
slide as large as your screen or wall. More people can view it at the
same time.
- The image is still. The picture remains stationary on the screen,
giving viewers an opportunity to focus first on the image, and then
on their memories.
- You can set your own pace to meet the needs of your group. You
may project the program once and then go through a second time, allowing
time for more discussion and explanation. You're in control.
- Slides are easy to use. Slides can be used in any model slide
projector. They're numbered, so stack them, box them, or tray them. Projectors
differ, but they all can be used smoothly after a little practice.
- You can make your own. Once you enjoy using slides, the next
step is to make your own to record events, or to bring in outside experiences.
